An indiscriminate group has received invitations to a mysterious affair called the Nevermore Gala. All anybody knows is that it will be an unforgettable bash held behind the mystifying Mirror of Daebub – an ancient relic that was recently purchased by one of Manhattan’s elite at an exclusive art auction. Nobody knows the reason, but the tycoon had second thoughts about his purchase and sold the magical mirror to an unknown buyer in the town of Nevermore – over two thousand miles away.

You’ve received an invitation to this cryptic social event of the year. Will you have the nerve to take a step into the mirror and face what lurks behind? This is where your story begins.

Disconnected

I did not like this mystery at all. The characters felt disconnected from the story and it didn’t make much sense. Also, in some of the character cards, it would make it seem like we needed to reveal stuff in the first round, but in the second round, we would need to conceal it. There also didn’t seem to be a point as to us having hidden characteristics. What did an alien, a witch, a zombie, etc have to do with the story? Nothing. I would not recommend this mystery.

Fun but lacking cohesive game play

Everyone had a good time and the game was fun, however, it was lacking some direction. It was unknown when the forensics report should have been read. We felt some of the clues were not cohesive and a little confusing. No one solved the murder.

So pleased with the game!

It was my first time hosting (or attending) a murder mystery party and it worked out great! We had 16 work colleagues and most of them had not been to one of these before. I bought all the props needed ahead of time so I wasn't reliant on people remembering, but next time I would give out the roles ahead of time and have people get more familiar with their characters. Everyone (age 30-60) had a great time and we were all surprised to find out who the killer was!

Nothing to compare it to

This was my first murder mystery of any kind, either as a player or host. We ran it twice with two different groups. Overall feedback from the participants for the event was good. Everyone had a great time. Murder Behind the Mirror gets some of that credit.

Gameplay: The overall strength. There was sufficient content provided in incremental doses to keep engaged characters occupied for a full evening. Strategic use of the bonus games helped draw it out. As written, the content itself was actually thin and did require smart hosting and creative characters to make the content last.

Theme & Solution: Probably moderate score, but again, my first. The theme seemed distracted and unfocused. The true identities had very little to do with the outcome and were more of a gameplay gimmick to give some of the players something to do. General feedback was that of underwhelmed. Ultimately the trailer did little to enhance the story or experience; it at best got folks excited for no particular reason. The solution itself was completely dependent on two pieces of information that were only widespread if those characters were incredibly diligent in their pairwise conversations. The promise to ensure critical information would get out there was not kept, in my opinion.

Party Website: Execution lagging behind the concept. Too much energy was put into props, including props that revealed too much to the other guests or that didn't apply to any of the characters. The trailer is good. The character descriptions were good, although hurt, in my opinion, by too much detail including costume suggestions and listed all characters, including optional, yet excluded the add-on characters, making it an imperfect list for nearly everyone. In the case of the website, less would have been more. I chose to send out the YouTube trailer link and a PDF of modified character summaries and only the characters who were going to be there.

PDF: The overall weakness. Not inherently bad, mind you, but with a little thought and consideration of the host, it could have been so much better and saved me a bunch of time. A few examples:

Materials and time. Why require 3 envelopes per character, only put two character cards per sheet of paper, and require a minimum of 5 cuts to extract those two cards to fit in the requisite envelopes? I reformatted the content to fit 4 per page (50% less paper), thereby only needing two cuts (60% less time), and folded them in half (100% less envelopes). Sure, the last part could have been done regardless. Along those same lines, why format the nametags with weird borders that can't be cut on single dividing lines resulting in symmetric appearance? Impact is small, but the lack of forethought is disappointing.

Player-host. There was an obvious, self-declared effort to let the host be a player-character and retain the mystery of the victim and murderer. That effort was lacking. For example, why make the Victim sign so that the secret information is on the same page as the instructions to the host? Rather, make it two pages, one with host instructions and one full page sign that can be printed and never looked at. This is also affected by the layout of the player cards, discussed above, as more cuts make it harder to keep eyes off while prepping the materials.

Host instructions. In addition to the example of the Victim sign above, there was also a lot of chaff in the host instructions. I created my own reminders page that cut out ~90% of the host instructions. It would not be hard to have a general "hosting a party" file that comes with every PDF download and leave the actual game-specific to easy-to-reference bulleted lists that are formatted to fit on single pages. Separating out reminders from prep and decorations from stuff to read would all make hosting cleaner, easier, and quicker.

All of that said, it really was good. We enjoyed it. This is more about missed opportunities that I observed in the party and the PDF that didn't have to be missed. If you're a careful party planner and host, you might find yourself also buying a lot of extra prep time that...I've already done for you. Maybe MyMysteryParty will do it for the rest of you.
