Mystery Synopsis

It is 1985, and Koko-Cola has been losing market share to its sweeter competitors. In response, the company has revised its classic formula and renamed the new beverage Best Cola. Koko-Cola CEO Martin McFly is hosting an enormous launch party and has invited the who's who of the entertainment industry to promote the new drink.

Unfortunately, Martin is one of the most dreadful executives in the business. Surrounded by devoted yes-men, he remains blind to the enemies he has created through stolen ideas, broken hearts, shattered egos, and outrageous acts of revenge.

You are one of the 1980s icons invited to the exclusive celebration. Martin has wronged you in the past, but he needs your celebrity status to help launch Best Cola. With so many famous rivals gathered in one place, this party could become more explosive than anyone expects. This is where your story begins.

Virtual Team Event

I used this game for a virtual team event I was hosting for my employees, just to get us a break from the usuall day to day. They had so much fun getting into character and it was incredibly easy to get set up and run. Highly recommend it as a unique way to bring some change of pace to a remote team or in person.

My team had a blast!

We ordered this virtual team event for our quarterly team celebration and my team had a blast! We did the pre-games, dressed up, and put character backgrounds. We used Teams and it worked seamlessly. We did two of the bonus games in-between rounds and the entire event lasted 2 hours. We also took a team pic as a keepsake. I was the host and also got to participate which was a nice bonus. I recommend and would purchase additional virtual games from My Mystery Party.

Absolutely Wonderful!

I did this with my coworkers and they had so much fun making costumes and drinking their "Koko cola"! It was a great story, very safe for work, very fun, the games were great too. Loved it. We are going to do another one next month.

We had a blast. This was easy to execute and fun!

Lots of fun for a birthday

While not the same as doing it in real life (people spent less effort on their costumes, we couldn't share a meal) this was still very good on zoom. The added videos and other game parts were great and added variety, and the story and characters were good. I've recommended it to friends and would definitely do another one.

Incredibly fun!!

I'm am the president of my university's gaming club and we did this game. It was so much fun! We're thinking of maybe even making it an annual occurance!!

Great fun! I would recommend this!

We had a lot of fun playing this! I would encourage people to use the pre-game as it was fun to email each other ahead of the event.
Thanks for building this game!
It was better than another night of Netflix during the pandemic!!

Perfect Game for Quarantine Fun

I bought this to celebrate my 30th virtually with friends and it was super fun! I split up the character packets into three parts (Pregame, Round 1, and Round 2) and emailed it off to friends and instructed them which part to open during game play. Someone created a playlist so when we were reading our new packets for rounds, it was fun to listen to music and do shots before getting back into character to continue.

It was super fun and easy to follow, although I would definitely advise looking through it all prior just to be sure you know what comes next. But the timeline and checklists made the flow easy to manage. I literally had everything I needed to make sure my friends and I had fun!

I highly recommend this for switching up virtual hangouts with friends! Can’t wait for our next murder mystery!

Fun!

Overall, it was excellent! A few more detailed directions would be helpful, such as more step-by-step. After we got started, it was easy.

totally 80s totally fun

Played this the other night with an old group of friends and we couldn't stop laughing (and reminiscing about the 80s). Very fun and easy.

Super fun! But could be improved...

My friends and I had a blast playing the game, even though unfortunately nobody solved the mystery. The game was really well organized and the videos really helped. I loved all the details and character bios. My main complaint is that it didn't feel very organic compared to in an person murder mystery. Everyone really stuck to the script, reading it word for word. It felt a little bit robotic, since not everyone was comfortable acting. Also, I felt like a lot of info from people's character bios got left out, which is super unfortunate because they were all well written interesting characters and I would have like to learn more about each of them. I think the instructions could be improved upon so that people don't just only read off the script. Maybe having little reminders or tips on each round of the little quirks or accents from their character bios, little things to mention, props or actions to do, ect. could be helpful. And a reminder to "Stay in character". Everyone was like "I'll go next" "ok, I'll read mine" "did you go yet?" "now, what?" "are we on round 1 or 2?".

A ton of fun!

A group of 10 of us did this for a birthday party, all on Zoom. Everyone LoVED the pre-game texting. That really set the mood and help us all get into it. The gameplay itself was just a little bit clunky since people get new info about themselves throughout the game and then just read it. But I’m not sure even what I would suggest to help that along so it really was fine. The videos and clues were well done and we had a great time! Hosting wasn’t too difficult and I still got to participate which was great. And it was a good price! Thank you for putting this together!!

A perfect B-day activity during a pandemic!

We played the 1985 Murder game virtually for my birthday since gathering in person during a pandemic was out of the question. It was the perfect party, so perfect I'll probably host a virtual game ever year! I had a lot of fun planning and encourage players to do the pre-game. In retrospect, we all agreed that it would have been ok, even helpful, if we had read ahead in the packets so we knew all the info about ourselves. There weren't really any spoilers, and it was kind of hard to start a new round with paragraphs of new info that you immediately needed to know and share. If you don't read ahead, make sure the host gives players enough time to read and digest the info. I imagine if you were playing in person or taking breaks that would have solved the issue.

Also, the game was so affordable for what you get!

FROM MMP STAFF:
Thank you for your feedback! We do not suggest allowing the players to read their whole packets before the game starts - the challenges are meant to be seen in real time, and you don't want players trying to solve them before the party begins. Also, the videos keep the story moving. If the players have already seen round two information before they hear the video during your game - it just will kill the story. So, we do not suggest ever allowing the players to view materials they are told not to view ahead of time. It's very calculated to give information in order while it's being played live. It's okay that there's a bit of a lull when round two begins after the video - let everyone enjoy a snack while they read their page :) We are super glad you enjoyed the game!

Lots of laughs!

We played this last weekend for a lockdown birthday party (we're in Melbourne Australia!). We played with the full 16 players and we laughed a lot! Best advice is to play the pre game it's so much fun and a great way to start things off. As the host there is a bit of preparing to do but you can still join in the game without any spoiler alerts. Encourage everyone to dress up and add as many accents as you can! Can't wait to do one IRL!

A Fun Team Building Event

Our group of 8 enjoyed the game. We enjoyed the pre-game activities to get into character.

During the game, we got a bit confused about how much to disclose and when, but easily addressed by the host resetting the group. The videos were good.

For the host, there was a bit more work than expected so give yourself some time to prepare and setup. Having the videos and instructions ready for sharing is key.

We will definitely come back for another game in future.

Lots of excitment brewing for our murder mystery!!!

My friends and I haven't actually played the game yet, but I am coordinating with them for next weekend via Zoom. We live in the northeast and it's starting to get too cold at night to do things outside so we are looking for virtual activities to keep our spirits up. I am coordinating pushing out information through a Facebook Event. It's been a great way to send some additional information to get people excited. We are doing Murder in 1985 so I sent a link to an 80's montage video and a link to popular cocktails from the 1980's. People are really getting into it and working on their customers and backgrounds. I was a little worried at first that the coordination would be complex and it would be hard for me to organize, but the documentation, with a timeline and checklist, has been fantastic and very easy to understand. I'm already looking forward to doing more of these over the winter! P.S. I plan to play the role of the detective, so I looked ahead to see who dunnit and who had critical other roles so that I could assign my most reliable friends the key characters. I also tried to match characters to personalities that I thought would be a good fit. We are all really looking forward to our murder mystery night!!!

From MMP Staff:
The host can and should play along! You can easily play a character and not know anything, as the spoilers are all in a separate file (& video with some games) that doesn't need to be opened until after the game is played. We're super glad you had fun, though! But next time - be a character :)

Was fun, but..

We had fun, we dressed up and played our parts right. It was challenging to do handwriting task online, because picture was split in 2 pages. To see both you need to really zoom out and you can't see much. To have it zoomed in, you need to switch between 2 pages and can't see the sample all the time. I hope mymystery party can adjust it, and fit everything to one page.
Also none of us guessed who the murderer was, and after watching reveal video, we all had questions, and would like a better explanation, how detective came to that conclusion.

Lots of fun but the instructions are a bit much

We used this as a virtual team building event during Quarantine. While we loved dressing up and being silly, as the host, the instructions were a lot to take in. The instructions were really all over the place and were way too wordy without really offering clear guidance. Also, it was a general consensus that although the rules tell participants not to read past a certain point in their character packets, it would have helped with character development and not truly given away any secret info. Overall, we still enjoyed ourselves and had fun. Would purchase another party.

Kids had a great time

My son wanted to do a murder mystery party for his 15th birthday. I wasn't sure how we were going to do this and keep socially distanced, so was pleasantly surprised to find My Murder Mystery Party when I googled "virtual murder mystery parties." My older daughter did one from this same company a few years ago and it was a big hit.

My son and his friends ended up having a great time- and many of their parents let me know that it was just what their kid needed! Being that they are teenage boys, I was worried at first that they wouldn't take it seriously. It also seemed that it took a little bit for them to get really in to it, but once it got rolling, they were all fully participating and getting in to it (I didn't play, but followed along and kept the timeline going. My son also asked me to assign his friends their characters so he wouldn't know who was essential and who wasn't).

I got a little worried that I had made a big mistake. Near the end of the party, when they were deliberating who they thought the killer was, I realized that I had mistaken the character of one of the kids that had to drop at the last minute. He was an essential character! I was panicking that maybe he was the killer and that I had ruined the entire thing. My younger daughter, who also didn't play, watched the reveal video and thankfully that person wasn't it. PHEW! I never did admit my error to my son. shhh... ;)

Fun staff activity

We played this for a staff retreat activity. The characters were really interesting and the clues were challenging without being so hard that they were frustrating - we were just wanting to have fun, after all.

I think they could improve the Host instructions and links for each document/video needed. I acted as the host and it was a little hard to follow what we were supposed to be doing in what order. I used the timeline, which helped, but the videos and evidences/clues were not all linked from there so I had to go somewhere else to find those.

Will buy and plan another mystery party!

I hosted the party w/ 10 guests over Zoom. Everyone said they had fun and it was a great time. We played one bonus game which people were into. It took about 2 hours to complete. We just took a 5-10 min intermission break between rounds. During the breaks I played 80s music and had the guests answer an 80s themed poll between rounds. Already planning my next virtual murder mystery!

Already planning another night!

We had a great time, this was my first virtual party (I have purchased and hosted 3 other regular murder mystery parties-which I now consider a hobby! LOL) and I wasn't sure what to expect. We only played the 6 main characters and all of us have played murder mystery games before and had a great time! It took us just over an hour. I would suggest making sure everyone takes their time and make sure to read everything on your scripts! We are already planning the next one with more characters!

Great fun

The whole thing was really good fun and well organised and easy to act out on the day. My only complaint is that given that this is designed to be virtual, all the documents were in portrait orientation making it way more difficult to share over zoom.. given that PowerPoint is the perfect medium for zoom style groups I feel they should make the effort to put the documents and audio files into a presentation that can be shared easily.. it’s a minor issue but it meant sending everyone those files on the night to make it easier to view them. Overall though a really fun evening and easy to get into

Great Fun!

The overall experience was a lot of fun but i think the PDF's are a little disorganized.. I had trouble as the host finding certain things when i needed them, If you made one long PDF of everything needed in the order it will be used that would be better. If i had a little more prep time i would have done it myself. overall everyone had a blast.

Brilliant night in

Absolutely loved it! Just spend some time before the event reading it all and planning it and it’s easy. It’s great it comes with video links so it looks super professional.

It’s not hard give everyone a character, each round people read their scripts!

We loved it!

Really enjoyed this game

This was my first time attending or hosting a murder mystery so I was a little nervous! On top of it, I had all 16 characters but one of the main characters dropped out 1 hour before!

I managed to switch a non-essential character to the missing main character last minute and after that everything rolled out smoothly.

We had no issues doing this over zoom but I would say that the host needs to be savvy with Zoom as there is a lot of screen/audio share exc.

Everyone really got into character and really enjoyed it! only 2 people guessed who the murderer was but perhaps we were having too much fun to really think too hard about the evidence! , I would defo do this again, thanks

Great product

A bit tougher than some of the others, but some great characters to get into and definitely possible to solve if you pay close attention to all the evidence.
